KCSS Hosts Fourth SMIDGE Webinar on Disinformation, Radicalization, and Extremism

The Kosovar Centre for Security Studies (KCSS) recently hosted the fourth SMIDGE Webinar, which explored how manipulative narratives, misinformation, and extremist propaganda spread online, fueling ideological divides and, in some cases, leading to violent extremism.

Bringing together leading experts, the webinar examined the mechanisms through which digital misinformation fosters radicalization, focusing on middle-aged populations (45–65). Algorithm-driven content, private messaging apps, and regional extremist narratives emerged as key drivers of radicalization.

Elena Broda offered a thought-provoking analysis of how algorithmic recommendation systems on social media platforms amplify extremist content, creating feedback loops that entrench ideological echo chambers.

Tijana Cvjetićanin examined the crucial role misinformation plays in shaping radicalizing narratives, with particular emphasis on how conspiracy theories often serve as the foundation for violence.

Nermina Kuloglija-Zolj shifted the focus to the Balkan region, where she explored the unique dynamics of extremism and radicalization.

Gentiana Paçarizi turned attention to Telegram, a messaging platform increasingly used to disseminate extremist content. She pointed out the platform’s role as a meeting ground for pro-Russian and Serbian nationalist groups, where violent rhetoric and ideological extremism are often shared in private, encrypted spaces beyond the reach of mainstream moderation.

The discussion also addressed potential solutions to counter disinformation and mitigate its impact on vulnerable populations. Key takeaways included:

- Strengthening media literacy programs to improve public awareness and critical thinking.

- Implementing policy interventions to regulate extremist content on social and messaging platforms.

-Promoting digital resilience strategies to prevent individuals from falling into disinformation-driven radicalization pathways.

As extremist narratives continue to evolve online, initiatives like SMIDGE play a crucial role in fostering evidence-based solutions and cross-sector collaboration.
